Empty Hangar Friday at YCAB

   16-Jul-10

Garrett Russell's report on Operations at YCAB today ...

An unusual sight at Hangar 105 this morning:

It was looking so empty because just about everything had to come out to clear the way for loading GQA onto a trailer to go with GBJ to next week’s GFA airworthiness course at Warwick. And since the trailer was not exactly tailor-made for the glider, Lindsay needed a little help to make things fit:

Fortunately the day’s crew included a couple of engineers (Dave Austin and Bob Hainsworth) a construction expert (Arthur Mailey) and a couple more instructors (Tony Sorensen and Barry McCarthy) so it only took a couple of hours of pushing, pulling and arguing to get the job done:

Many hands having made light work, we then went off to play on RWY 12 with GXQ, CQC, IKW and GRS in tow. Although first launch was not until almost 1100, the day’s total play was 9 flights and just over 5 hours flying, cut short in the end by some high cirrus which turned off the gentle winter’s day lift.

Ken Wishaw, rejoining the club after some time away with the Army, showed he has not lost any of his touch with the longest flight of the day – 1:15 with Barry McCarthy in IKW. Welcome back, Ken!

Ken and Barry had two flights together, Arthur and Bob shared two mutuals, and Dave Austin also took off twice with former North Queensland club-mate Steve McGrath.

Thanks to John Knox and Steve Bowtell for launching us all.

Meanwhile work at the hangars continued:

But before you jump to any conclusions about slipping standards in Speedy Gonsalves’ paint work, the identity of the mystery artist must be revealed:

Yes, Kevin Rodda’s professionally painted (well, accountancy is a profession) trailer is also in the procession to Warwick. We wish Kevin with his 1-35, Lindsay Mitchell with the IS-30 and Eric Dickeson with the Blanik safe passage up Cunningham’s Gap this weekend. Their route will be easy to follow, just look for the trailer crumbs dropped behind:
