Subject: Totally Wild Wednesday at YCAB

What do Tony Sorensen, Barry McCarthy, Kevin Rodda and Garrett Russell have in common? They have all met Ranger Stacey from Channel 10’s Totally Wild. This came about because we were all at the field with Peter and Emma John – and Emma’s proud mum – to help film a segment for the kids’ TV series. Star of the show was Emma, talking to Tracey about her acceptance into the Australian Defence Force Academy and showing for the cameras how gliding helped her to get there. Emma made three flights for the cameras in GBJ, towed up by her proud dad and chased around the sky by Kevin’s Grob G109B (FQZ) with a camera aboard. Other gliders on the flight line were IKW and the two ES-KA6s (GRS and GRV). The Twin Astir (IKW) was used purely for set dressing, but Barry and Kevin each took a hangar flight to show the film crew how quickly a wood and fabric flying carpet gets into the air with a good sea breeze. The day’s result: 5 flights and an upcoming episode of Totally Wild which just might inspire some more youngsters to knock on the pie cart door. Thanks to all who gave their time and effort and aircraft, and especially to Emma for attracting the cameras to CGC.

The "Totally Wild" crew arrives at 06 to film a story on Emma John's background in gliding ... Emma has been accepted into pilot training with the Australian Defence Force Academy.

An unusual sight for a Wednesday at YCAB ... the pie cart as well as SPA, RV, RS, IKW, FQZ and BJ at the 06 flight line. Ground crew for the day consisted of Peter John, Tony Sorensen, Barry McCarthy, Garrett Russell and Kevin Rodda.

A very proud Dad (Peter John) with Emma and Mum.

Ranger Stacey watches on as the small video camera is set up on BJ's front instrument panel for the first of Emma's three flights in BJ today. Tony Sorensen and Garrett Russell (obscured) offer technical advice?

Garrett filmed from the rear seat of BJ during Emma's second flight. Emma's third flight was another solo in BJ while Kevin Rodda positioned FQZ with Garrett in the passenger seat to take some air-to-air footage.

The main interview footage was of course taken by the big camera on the ground. If you are planning  on travelling to a remote area any time soon you should consider taking a boom-mike like this one along with you as a safety device ... every time it was turned on today a helicopter or other form of powered aircraft seemed to appear from out of nowhere to interrupt the sound recording!
