Oakey Airspace

(these notes relate to an airspace map on display at DDSC - see extract below)

The areas marked in orange relate to the Oakey Restricted Military Airspace.

Within each area will be found two or more restricted training area designations (e.g. R643B) each followed by two numbers (or one number and SFC) separated by a line which indicates the highest band (above surface level) that the particular training area occupies.

The two purple lines radiating out from Jondaryan township mark the Eastern boundary of Area Glider South Alpha which extends to the West out to the 23 DME radial.

This area is clearly within restricted Oakey Military airspace, but on request is routinely released to DDSC for gliding operations. But with an important limitation - only areas R643A, R643B and R643C are released. This imposes a height restriction of 6,500ft AGL, or 7,700 ft AMSL. Allowing for separation levels, we are therefore restricted to a max height of 7,000 QNH within Area South Alpha (unless R655 is released on special application.

What does all of this mean in a practical sense?
1.

Do not go North of the railway line until you are past Blaxland (but why not make that Dalby to be on the safe side).

2.

If you are heading NE from Dalby, keep to the West of the Bell branch railway until past Kaimkillenbun.

3.

On your way home from the West, get below 7000 ft QNH before you cross the line Cecil Plains - Dalby, and NEVER track North of the Western Railway.

Note: The Oakey Airspace is seldom active on weekends, but always check to be sure.
